Yorkshire’s Food Capital lived up to its name on Saturday when several food-related events attracted visitors to Malton.
November’s Monthly Food Market hosted over 40 food and drink stalls, and showcased four chef demos in the Milton Rooms, while Malton Cookery School in Saville Street held its first Country House Cookery Course with tutor Lady Isabella Naylor-Leyland.
The market’s chef demos included Ashley McCarthy of Ye Old Sun Inn at Colton, near Copmanthorpe, who cooked a full three course meal in just 30 minutes during both his demonstrations. His menu included a wild mushroom and hazelnut gnocchi, pan fried mackerel fillet with pink fir apple potatoes, samphire and heritage tomatoes, followed by a strawberry cheesecake dessert.
The Crown and Cushion, Welburn, was represented by Matthew Smith and Dean Wade who prepared a rib of beef, which included boning out the joint of mature beef during their first demo. The chefs then prepared fresh burgers and steaks before the audience during their second cookery demo.
Tom Naylor-Leyland, Director of Malton Monthly Food Markets, said: “The atmosphere in Malton on Saturday was marvellous, with stallholders doing a brisk trade, despite the rain in the afternoon.
“The quality of the produce available was second- to-none and the Cookery School was in ‘full swing’, Malton was the place to be this weekend!”
The last Monthly Food Market will take place in Malton on Saturday 13th December, while the 2015 market season kicks off on Saturday 14th March. The annual Food Lovers Festival takes place on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May 2015.
