Goodnight Mister Tom, sees Michelle Magorian’s wonderfully uplifting tale brought to life in this magical stage adaptation by David Wood.

Set during the build-up to WWII, Goodnight Mister Tom follows the adventures of young William Beech when he is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside.  Here he forges a remarkable and heart-warming friendship with an elderly recluse, Tom Oakley.

Tom has never got over the death of his wife 40 years earlier but he is touched by the misery of the little evacuee who arrives ill-nourished covered in bruises and unable to read.

William learns to read and makes friends…in fact all is perfect until he is suddenly summoned back to London by his formidable mother.

Tom is played by Craig Kirby whose past roles with PMUT include Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd and Mr Briggs in Our Day Out.  William is played by Jack Hambleton and his friend Zac by Zac Stewart – both PMUT newcomers.

Elanor Dunn – who brought the wonderful pig to life in Betty Blue Eyes - returns to Pick Me Up to create one of the play’s most important characters, Mister Tom’s loyal sheepdog Sammy.

The show is on at The John Cooper Studio Theatre, @41Monkgate, York.  and Goodnight Mister Tom from March 22-26.  Tickets from www.pickmeuptheatre.com.
